Abstract

SCHMIDT-WELLE, Friedhelm. Abstract regionalism and the symbolic representation of nation in Latin American literature from the region. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.130, pp.115-127. ISSN 2448-7554.

In Latin America, the notion of "literary regionalism" is applied to two literary currents: on the one hand, the literature of a certain region with its localisms; on the other the so-called "regional" or "regionalist novel", which includes Indianist and indigenist narratives. The apogee of the latter occurred during the first three decades of the 20th century. This article underscores the fact that in contrast to the local literature of a region, the regional or regionalist novel is a symbolic representation of the nation itself and, in this sense, constitutes a national allegory.

Keywords : National allegory; Latin American literature; nation; novel; regionalism.
