Abstract

CASAS MENDOZA, Carlos Alberto. Modernization, territory and indigenist politics: the island of Bananal (Mato Grosso, Brazil) and the highlands of Chiapas (Mexico); 1940-To-1960. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.130, pp.91-113. ISSN 2448-7554.

This article undertakes a comparison of two processes of modernization, propelled in peripheral regions of Mexico and Brazil: namely, the Highlands of Chiapas in Mexico, ant the Island of Bananal, a region situated in the northern zone of the modern state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. To elaborate the two cases several sources of information were consulted, including newspapers, reports by government functionaries, and the theater, which was one of the principal means of persuasion and diffusion used to promote the indigenist policies of the period.
