Abstract

ARRIOJA DIAZ VIRUELL, Luis Alberto. Swarms" and "Clouds" in the Oaxacan Countryside: the Plagues of Locusts in 1802 and 1853. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.129, pp.161-213. ISSN 2448-7554.

This study presents a reflection on the factors that led to the emergence and spread of two plagues of locusts in the lands of the modern-day state of Oaxaca. To this end, it examines the agricultural damage caused by those insects, and discusses the actions inplemented -by both authorities and Indigenous peoples- to combat them. Finally, it analyzes the advances and setbacks that ocurred in relation to the understanding of such plagues in the 19th century.
