Abstract
GONZALEZ GONZALEZ, Gabriela del Carmen. Metaphors of the Cross: A Case of Ideological Penetration in the State of Colima, Mexico. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2011, vol.32, n.128, pp.29-52. ISSN 2448-7554.
Gabriela del Carmen González González, Universidad de Colima This article shows how metaphors of the cross function pragmatically as instruments of ideological penetration that operate in two dimensions: one conscious, on the part of the Catholic Church, the other deferred and unconscious among believers in Colima, Mexico; who through a form of selfpersuasion come to feel safe, secure and protected. Simultaneously, these metaphors help people adapt to their surroundings by reaffirming their beliefs and interpreting reality on the basis of a fatalistic religious cultural scheme.
Keywords : cross; metaphor; icon; symbol; ideological penetration.
