Abstract

TRUJILLO BRETON, Jorge Alberto. The excesses of desire: incontinence and sexual violence against children and young people in Jalisco, 1885-1911. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2011, vol.32, n.127, pp.153-194. ISSN 2448-7554.

Sexual violence in Porfirian Jalisco had unique characteristics and formed part of the gender violence that afected, primarily, children and young people of both sexes. The victims of this kind of violence were mainly young women who could be attacked in their own homes, but young men -though fewer in number- were also raped in open or anonymous spaces by individuals who were older, stronger or, in some cases, more numerous. Rapes, kidnappings, sexual assaults and even incest constituted serious problems that swelled the statistics on criminality and together occupied an important place, surpassed only by crimes involving bloodshed and economic felonies. This sexual violence was totally contrary to the Porfirian sexual mores portrayed in the discourse of the time, which warned young people, especially, to be aware of the vices and perils they might confront and that could corrupt their formation as citizens responsible for helping to forge a modern society.

Keywords : infancy; youth; sexual violence; gender violence; crime; homosexuality.
