Abstract

LOPEZ SANTILLAN, Ángeles A.  and  MARIN GUARDADO, Gustavo. Tourism, Capitalism and the Production of the Exotic: A Critical Perspective for the Study of the Commoditization of Space and Culture. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2010, vol.31, n.123, pp.219-260. ISSN 2448-7554.

This essay presents a critical review of the principal topics and discussions in the area of tourism studies, from the confluence of disciplines like anthropology, sociology and geography, in order to highlight the evolution of nodal theoretical concepts and focuses that are topics in contemporary debates. From this starting point, it goes on to suggest lines of analysis that may significantly enrich the debate surrounding modern societies and their relation to global dynamics. More than offering a 'state of the question' in relation to this issue, the essay discusses orientations that approach this topic from the perspective of a process that produces commodities for consumption by tourists.

Keywords : tourism; commoditization; space; culture.
