Abstract

CARBAJAL LOPEZ, David. The Years of Hunger in Bolaños (1785-1786): Mining Conflicts, Corn Shortages and High Mortality. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2010, vol.31, n.121, pp.57-81. ISSN 2448-7554.

The objective of this study is to explain the high mortality registered in Real de Bolaños during the years of hunger in 1785-1786, in a setting characterized by local mining conflicts and corn shortages that affected large areas of central-western New Spain. Also, it analyzes the victims of that subsistence crisis from two perspectives: first, by examining global body counts of the dead and, second, by investigating the Christian and f amily names of the victims.

Keywords : Bolaños; mining conflicts; corn shortages; hunger; mortality.
