Abstract

The garlic white rot is the main fungal disease of this crop in Zacatecas, Mexico. Even if most garlic fields are infested with Sclerotium cepivorum sclerotia, there are no current reports about the influence of cultural practices prior to planting on the dispersal of sclerotia of the pathogen. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of cultural practices prior to planting on the dispersal of sclerotia of the fungus. From a 0.9 ha field with a history of S. cepivorum, 90 soil samples were taken at depths ranging from 0-20cm (A) and from 21-40 cm (B) and they were analyzed to count the number of sclerotia before and after soil preparation. After soil preparation there was a 30.3 % increase in the number of samples with sclerotia in the deeper soil layer and no difference in the number of sclerotia in the upper soil layer was observed.
