Abstract

ECO, Umberto. Five Senses of Semantics. Acta poét [online]. 2018, vol.39, n.2, pp.13-33. ISSN 2448-735X.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ap.2018.2.835.

The Italian semiologist and writer Umberto Eco (1932-2016) problematizes the notion of semantics, understood in a limited way as "the study of the meaning of words". Eco parts from five conceptions of semantics, which belong to various schools of linguistics, language philosophy, literary theory and lexicography, in order to highlight the complexity of the term and, therefore, the idea of meaning.

Keywords : semantics; meaning; linguistics; language philosophy; lexicography.
