Abstract

AZUELA, Cristina. "Trickstan": the Interlaced Construction of the Hero and the Trickster in Tristan the Monk. Acta poét [online]. 2011, vol.32, n.2, pp.15-54. ISSN 2448-735X.

The 13th Century German text: Tristan as a Monk, is one of the independently published episodes of the longer versions of Tristan's legend. In it, the portrait of the chivalric hero is intertwined with the description of his trickster's features. The uniqueness of this text is not just that it catalizes brilliantly the 'trickster' elements of the protagonist, but rather reworks the portrait of the unblemished chivalrous hero so as to contrast it with the picaresque transgressor. The intertwining structure combines both traits in such a way as to show that each aspect of the personality are indissoluble from the other. In the same way, the text transforms itself into a trickster text in which generic distinctions are blurred: beginning with a courtly narration and ending with a burlesque tone. Such a structure is similar to that found in short comic stories as fabliaux and nouvelles.

Keywords : Hero; trickster; intertwinement; short comic story; short courtly story.
