Abstract

MICHEL MODENESSI, Alfredo. Dissident humor: correlations to approach "upper" and "lower" Shakespeare. Acta poét [online]. 2009, vol.30, n.1, pp.165-217. ISSN 2448-735X.

This paper examines Shakespeare's cultural context, focusing on several examples of irony, intended to illuminate the playwright's often overlooked sense of humor. The exploration of issues inherent to Shakespeare's social and political milieu, and on specific examples of the visual and dramatic arts of his time -namely a painting by Veronese and the anonymous Tragedy of Arden of Faversham- seeks to suggest alternative ways to "re-frame" the worn-out picture shown in commonplace interpretations of "The Bard".

Keywords : Shakespeare; humor; Veronese; milieu.
