Abstract

SUAREZ, Marcela A.. (Re)presentation of the Conflict Mother-in-Law vs. Daughter-in-Law in Hecyra: a Terentian Innovation. Nova tellus [online]. 2019, vol.37, n.2, pp.67-84. ISSN 0185-3058.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2019.37.2.819.

Abstract:

Relationship between the sexes is focused in many comedies, but Hecyra presents family life, particularly a mother-in-law, whose character is marked off by prejudice and unfavorable opinion. What we intend here is to emphasize (re) presentation of the conflict mother-in-law vs. daughter-in-law in terms of odium-ira, our aim is trying to define true Terentian innovation. Sostrata, focus of the conflict, is structured like a socrus benevola because she is a bona matrona. Terence follows his own dramatic convention while innovating in front of a double challenge: real life and traditional codification.

Keywords : Hecyra; Terence; Latin Comedy; Mother-in-Law; Daughter-in-Law.
