Abstract

This article first discusses some general issues on complexity and relevance of medicine assessment, and describes the wide variety of examination formats that have been developed to evaluate students' achievements and competence of practicing physicians. Then gives an overview of the multiple-choice test, the most commonly used type of test item, with its major advantages and disadvantages. This article also refers to computer-based testing, which has recently gained popularity as testing modality in most medical schools.
