Passed the milenarist restlessness, Spanish university faces new challenges in the present scene. Starting from this reality, the article tries to know where is the university institution today. In order to carry out this analysis, in the first place, the held signs of identity until the moment are scrutinized, ending with the necessity to continue developing the paradigm of quality in the university sceneries. The second section, taking advantage of debates supported from the climate of change generated with the bet of the policies of European convergence, is centred on the elements that are forming the attachment lines of "necessary university", from that concludes with reflections that project "possible university".
