Abstract

PADILLA GONZALEZ, Laura Elena; JIMENEZ LOZA, Leonardo  and  RAMIREZ GORDILLO, María de los Dolores. Satisfaction at work for the academic staff and how this is connected with their intention to quit teaching. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2013, vol.35, n.141, pp.08-25. ISSN 0185-2698.

The authors analyze, based on the survey "Reconfiguring the academic profession in Mexico" ("Reconfiguración de la profesión académica en México", RPAM), which was carried out with a sample of higher education teachers from the whole country, the academic staff's answers about their satisfaction at work; and they connect them with the answers about their intention to quit the academic profession. Their main theoretical model is Hagedorn's model (2000). The author discover that half of the academic staff who took part in the survey expressed their intention to try out another professional experience, which means that it is very important to pay attention to those who are intending to quit total or partially the academic profession. Based en the results, this can be connected to the satisfaction at work, in which relevant factors are wage, job stability, assessment and stimuli systems and the existence of efficient communication, participation and organization systems within the higher education institution where the academic staff is working.

Keywords : Satisfaction at work; Professional satisfaction; Academic staff; Higher education; Working climate.
