Abstract

FREIRE SEOANE, María Jesús; NUNEZ FLORES, Maura  and  TEIJEIRO ALVAREZ, Mercedes. Education in Panama: A state of affairs. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.138, pp.75-91. ISSN 0185-2698.

This article offers a detailed analysis of the current situation of education in the Republic of Panama. In the first part the authors contrast several indicators of the educational system in their country with other Latinamerican countries. In the second one they give an in-depth outlook of the training situation of the Panamanian population and the advances that have been achieved during the last decade. It is important to emphasize that the existing studies about the actual situation of education in Panama have been until now very limited, and this, together with the novelty of the data that were gathered, makes the present research different. The main discoveries show that the educational levels have been improving, although the results still do not have the wished impact on particular population groups, and particularly amongst Indigenous people.

Keywords : Education; Indigenous population; Illiteracy; Educative system.
