The authors carried out a phenomenological study based on a quantitative methodology with as purpose to describe the beliefs of fathers and mothers about their children's participation in education. Using the typical case method, 12 fathers and 12 mothers of a rural primary school in the south of the State of Sonora (Mexico) were selected. The results show that fathers and mothers use to consider relevant their children's education and that they take part in it, but only in the dimensions related to upbringing and learning supervision at home, not in those that can be linked with communication and school support. The mothers show a wider range of participation and usually more committed than the fathers, and they use to mention difficulties and needs that have to do with themselves and that symbolize obstacles to an effective participation. The conclusion of this study is that it is necessary to qualify fathers and mothers to help them attain a wider overview of the ways in which they can take part in their children's education.
