Abstract

The culture of evaluation in educational institutions: Understanding of indicators, competencies and underlying values. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.131, pp.42-63. ISSN 0185-2698.

This article presents the results of a research study of the evaluation culture in five public institutions: high schools and higher education. An instrumental case study methodology was done with data from 30 representatives institutions. The results are presented around the three components of the evaluation culture: 1) how different educational actors understand the evaluation and, especially, the use of the institutional indicators; 2) the competencies that key people need in each institution in order to participate in the evaluation process; as well as the training they must receive to make an appropriate evaluation; and, 3) the underlying values that determine the use of the evaluation results, how to handle possible ethnic conflicts and the value that is given to the evaluation itself.
