Abstract

RODRIGUEZ JIMENEZ, José Raúl; URQUIDI TREVINO, Laura Elena  and  PEREZ BARBIER, Adeline. New configuration of the graduate studies in Sonora: The rising of private institutions. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2011, vol.33, n.131, pp.28-41. ISSN 0185-2698.

At the end of last decade, graduate courses in Sonora had a relatively reduced demand that was mainly fulfilled by solid public, higher education, institutions. However, starting in the year 2000 this demand has rapidly increased. In six years, between 2001 and 2007, its enrollment grew five times, while the number of institutions doubled and the total number of programs tripled. This expansion would not have been possible without the involvement of private institutions because they have more dynamism, specifically in student recruitment. The rising of private institutions is not only changing the traditional pattern of development of graduate studies, but also its programs are operating without offering reliable information about its performance and quality.

Keywords : Graduate studies; growth; private institutions; Sonora.
