Abstract

Mexico has experienced a relevant rise of the amount of women enrolled in higher education, even in degree studies traditionally considered as masculine. This article starts with a brief allusion to the recommendations set forth by international organizations and national policies to promote the enrollment of women in higher education. The second part tries to show how, at national level and only for undergraduate studies, a typically masculine area such as engineering has experienced the most important increase of the amount of women comparing to other areas and the mostly known as "feminine" courses. A third purpose is to finish off the differences in rise by federative entity based on two variables: preference and participation. Several women were interviewed, who chose for that area and are enrolled at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana - Azcapotzalco. Finally, the article outlines some hypotheses about this growth and guidelines in order to carry out the study at different levels and dimensions.
