Abstract

MORAL DE LA RUBIA, José. Predicción del rendimiento académico universitario. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2006, vol.28, n.113, pp.38-63. ISSN 0185-2698.

The objective of the present paper is to study the relationship of academic performance with intellectual capacity, alexithymia, mental health and socio-demographic variables. The sample consisted of 362 students. The intelligence was measured by the DAT and the Domino Series, the alexithymia by the TAS-20, the mental health by the MMPI and the academic performance by the semester grade-point average and the number of second opportunity subjects. The data statistical analysis was done by techniques of correlation, regression and factor analysis. The academic performance was associated fundamentally with the intellectual capacities, although in a weak way. In regard to alexithymia, the grade-point average dichotomized by first and third quartiles showed a significant relationship with Externally Oriented Thinking (EOT) (TAS-20 third factor) and the number of second opportunity subjects with Difficulty Describing Feelings (DDF) (TAS-20 first factor in Mexican adaptation), but with influence of the age in this latter relationship. The intelligence scales (DAT, Domino Series) were the significant predictors of academic performance. On the contrary, the scales of alexithymia (TAS-20) and psychic imbalance (MMPI) as well as the socio-demographic variables were inadequate predictors.

Keywords : Academic performance; Intelligence; Alexithymia; Intellectual quotients; TAS-20; MMPI.
