Abstract

MENDOZA GARCIA, Leticia. Liberal and Presbyterian Women in the 1901 Liberal Congress’ Context. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2022, n.63, pp.117-144.  Epub Mar 24, 2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2022.63.77687.

The present text aims to analyze the actions of Zitácuaro, Michoacan’s liberal and Presbyterian women in the context of the San Luis Potosí’s Liberal Congress. Women’s participation in female clubs, newspapers and civic tribunes was a major achievement in a society where males traditionally played these roles. Women’s aim was to counteract the clergy’s influence on women by means of a liberal school project that would train modern women able to participate in civic, political and democratic spaces on equal terms with males.

Keywords : liberal women; public space; liberal congress; Presbyterianism; liberal school.
