Abstract

PRECIADO DE ALBA, Carlos Armando  and  TREJO PINEDO, Virginia. The Elections of Deputies in Guanajuato for the Cortes in 1821. Electoral Practices and Political Expectations. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2021, n.61, pp.39-70.  Epub Jan 31, 2022. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2021.61.76615.

This article is aimed to examine the electoral process of deputies of Guanajuato for the Cortes of Madrid in 1820, including its complex organization and implementation at different levels. This electoral process was carried out in a context of great expectations because the restored Constitution of Cádiz decreed that Guanajuato’s political and economic demands -the creation of a District Deputation among them- would be attended and resolved by the Cortes. By then, the commitment to political representation and parliamentary activity became extensive in the region. By analyzing this process, we suggest new explanations for the transition of the viceregal regime to the beginnings of Mexico’s national life.
