Abstract

ESPINOSA AGUIRRE, Joaquín Edgardo. Make Ten Men Look Like Hundreds. An Essay on Quantitative Militarization in Guanajuato Command (1813-1817). Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2021, n.61, pp.5-38.  Epub Jan 31, 2022. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2021.61.72815.

In this article, a quantitative analysis is applied to catch a glimpse of the way New Spain and particularly the Bajío region populations were affected by massive recruitment. The first part approaches the counterinsurgency defensive system deployed in the Guanajuato command since 1813 on, when Agustín de Iturbide was commissioned there by Viceroy Félix María Calleja. The second part approaches the exponential increasing of the urban militia from a quantitative perspective to obtain data about the relationship between the number of troops and the populations where they were recruited from.

Keywords : war of independence; militarization; counterinsurgency; Guanajuato command; urban militias; sub-delegations; Agustín de Iturbide.
