Abstract

This article analyzes the creation of the Arts and Trades Correctional School of Oaxaca City during the period between 1889, when it was inaugurated by a government decree, and 1901, when it was renamed as the Industrial Military School. It studies the ideas and measures used to establish it as an institution of social control, as well as various aspects of its modus operandi, the type of students it received and the way it was used by the parents and relatives of the young persons who lived there.
