Abstract

MONTIEL VERA, José Antonio. Among Officials, Encomenderos, Vicars and Muleteers. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2021, n.65, pp.119-147.  Epub Jan 20, 2023. ISSN 2448-6922.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24486922e.2021.65.76855.

The objective of this text is to unravel how the indigenous space of Orizaba was transformed through the imposition of administrative centers -parish and township- which favored the predominance of Spaniards over rural and urban areas. This study can contribute historiography to understand the beginnings of colonial society where the congregation of the Indian population and the intervention of new settlers in the town took place. It is interesting how the actors, including caciques and Spaniards, negotiated the sale of properties. This land alienation involved the royal officials of the high hierarchy as well as the local notaries of the Tequila district.

Keywords : Town of San Miguel de Orizaba; Tequila district; royal officials; population congregations; land market.
