Abstract

GOYAS MEJIA, Ramón. Land por razón de pueblo. Ejidos and fundos legales of Indigenous Communities during the Colonial Period. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2020, n.63, pp.67-102.  Epub Jan 21, 2021. ISSN 2448-6922.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24486922e.2020.63.75367.

During the Viceroyalty period, indigenous communities were granted portions of land for settlement and livelihood purposes. Said land was referred to by different titles until the 18th century, when it was called ejido and fundo legal. This study aims to provide historical elements on the application of these legal figures in the allocation of land to the indigenous peoples in the jurisdictions of New Spain and New Galicia, as well as in the confusion and semantic changes that affected them both.

Keywords : ejido; fundo legal; Indian villages; Nueva España; Nueva Galicia.
