Soon after the conquest of the pre-Hispanic kingdoms, the phase of colonization in the “new” territories begun. The Spanish Crown distributed large areas of land for agricultural or livestock production to promote the establishment of the colonists. In spite of there being support, the spread of both the Spanish population and the Hispanic agricultural colonization followed different processes, at the local scale. Several criteria influenced the advancement of land occupation such as geographical features of the sectors, the patterns of pre-Hispanic settlements, as well as the features of each native landscape, and the preceding land conditions that could be exploited and appropriated by the settlers.
