Abstract

TLACXANI SEGURA, Gonzalo. Instructions and questionnaire for the writing of the general history of the Order of Discalced Carmelites in the New Spain, 17th century. Estud. hist. novohisp [online]. 2017, n.57, pp.97-110. ISSN 2448-6922.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ehn.2017.03.002.

The present group of texts correspond to a series of letters and a questionnaire signed by fray Juan de los Reyes, Carmelite provincial of New Spain, addressed to fray Agustín de la Madre de Dios, a Carmelite friar appointed in 1646 as chronicler of the Province of San Alberto. These three documents are invaluable because they form the backbone that guided almost seven years of research, which resulted in the writing of the first and second versions of the chronicle entitled: Tesoro Escondido en el Monte Carmelo mexicano. Mina rica de exemplos y virtudes en la historia de los Carmelitas Descalzos de la provincia de la Nueva España.

Keywords : Agustín de la Madre de Dios; Province of San Alberto; Order of the Discalced Carmelites; Provincial chronicle; Juan de los Reyes.
