This article studies the perception of insecurity and the security practices of the low-income population of Lima, Peru. Previous studies define fear as the emotional component of the perception of insecurity. Following a qualitative approach, 30 in-depth interviews were conducted with both men and women. Findings highlight the relevance of directly witnessing criminal acts as an integral part of insecurity perception, as well as the feeling of rage as an emotional aspect linked to collective security practices. Additionally, security practices correlate with degrees of neighborhood progress.
