Abstract

CASTANEDA RODRIGUEZ, Víctor Mauricio. An Inquiry on Public Corruption and its Determinants. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2016, vol.61, n.227, pp.103-135. ISSN 0185-1918.  https://doi.org/10.1016/S0185-1918(16)30023-X.

The study of public corruption has become particularly prominent since the 2008 international economic crisis. This kind of occurrence demands improving control of public funds to close the gap between public income and expenditure. However, certain theoretical and empirical connections remain ambiguous when researching determinants and therefore a significant amount of preliminary conclusions cannot be taken as a political or policy guide. Besides posing a pertinent literature examination, this paper holds that a central factor that limits the scope of corruption is the likelihood to be uncovered. Several econometric specifications are also considered, using a non-balanced facts panel incorporating figures for over 150 countries between 1995 and 2010, in order to identify how solid some statistical associations are, so that they could be taken as reference to design the necessary strategies towards corruption control.

Keywords : corruption; crime economics; index of legal compliance; education.
