Abstract

OCEGUEDA HERNANDEZ, Juan Manuel. The balance of payments constraint-growth hypothesis. A evaluation of the mexican economy, 1960-1997. Inv. Econ [online]. 2000, vol.60, n.232, pp.91-122. ISSN 0185-1667.

This article tests the balance of payments constraint-growth hypothesis for mexican economy and suggests that restriction of the trade balance on long term growth is greater for the period 1983-1997 than the period 1960-1982. This phenomenon is caused by the significant increase of the demand income elasticity for imports, which is greater than for the exports.
