Abstract
DRUCKER, Adam G.; GOMEZ GONZALEZ, Verónica and MAGANA RUEDA, Sergio. Pollutant or Useful By-Product? The Importance of the Value of By Products in the Determination of Strategies and Policy for the Treatment of Animal Waste. Inv. Econ [online]. 1999, vol.59, n.227, pp.111-141. ISSN 0185-1667.
Yucatecan puericulture has been one of the most significant activities in the region's economy. Yet the waste generated by these animals has produced effects that are prejudicial in terms of the ecology and sanitation. A particular problem for Yucatan is pollution of the phreatic substratum, which supplies most of the population with its water. This pollution happens all too easily, as the discharge of residual animal waters is one of the region's main causes of pollution by organic matter. At the same time, an analysis of the net costs of converting potentially pollutant residual waters into a useable commodity, suggests that a large percentage of such treatment costs could be covered. This has implications both for the producers in their treatment strategies, as well as for the development of regulatory policy.
