Abstract
MASFERRER KAN, Elio. Los ritos de paso y su incidencia en el campo religioso mexicano. Cuicuilco [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.57, pp.191-205. ISSN 0185-1659.
This article reviews the importance of the rites of passage in the configuration of the religious field. After a brief conceptualization of these rites, it reviews the historic struggle for controlling them in Mexican history. A key point of this work is the comparison of census data on religion with the available data on catholic rites of passage in order to reconstruct the census numbers dependent on the occurrence or non occurrence of the rites of passage. We estimate that the number of Catholics ranges between 42.14 % (47 million) and 73.8 % (almost 83 million) of the Mexican population. Therefore, this puts into question the estimate of Catholics, 82.7 % of the total population, provided by INEGI using the 2010 Census.
