Abstract

FUENTES GOMEZ, José Humberto  and  FORMOSO SIERRA, Zuleika. Representaciones y discursos sobre multiculturalidad, identidad y patrimonio urbanos del Programa Mérida, Capital Americana de la Cultura, 2000. Cuicuilco [online]. 2008, vol.15, n.42, pp.181-205. ISSN 0185-1659.

The article examines and analyzes the Program Merida American Capital of Culture 2000 as a significant case of urban cultural policy, emphasizing: a) their concepts of multiculturalism and urban culture, b) their ideas about the historical patrimony of the city, and c) their social representations of the identity of the meridanos. It also gives an account of the agents, actions and spaces involved. We concluded that even though it included 3,000 activities, over an entire year, based on a simplistic conception of cultural diversity of citizens, did not exceed the traditional perspective on the cultural offer and it reproduced class stereotypes.

Keywords : cultural policies; urban identities; representations; multiculturalism.
