This article is a study about electoral realignments. It focuses on sharp and permanent changes in party preferences and their impact on electoral performances. The author looks at a series of key concepts, including informed electoral choices, election periods and electoral realignments. The article al so discusses regional differences and highlights sorne measures to assess them: the size of the party system, the index of competitiveness, the index of electoral volatility, the extent of divisions and regional dispersion of preferences.
