Abstract

JACOME MORENO, Cristóbal Andrés. The Constructions of the Image: The Series of the Urban Complex of Nonoalco-Tlatelolco by Armando Salas Portugal. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2009, vol.31, n.95, pp.85-118. ISSN 0185-1276.

Among those dedicated to the portrayal of modern architecture in Mexico, the work of the photographer Armando Salas Portugal is of great importance. Known internationally for his visual codification of the work of the architect Luis Barragán, Salas Portugal collaborated with a considerable number of architects, including Mario Pani. An example of the dialogue between Salas Portugal and Pani was the series of the Nonoalco-Tlatelolco Urban Complex done in 1966, after the completion of the development. Consisting of images that show links with the photographic vanguard, the series was introduced in the communications media, specifically in the Arquitectura-México journal, of which Pani was editor. Once inserted in the field of publications, Salas Portugal's photographs acquired a publicizing role, aimed both at promoting the architect and illustrating the possibility of new and better models for urban living through the large-scale dwelling complex.
