Abstract

ROBIN, Alena. El retablo de Xaltocán, las Imágenes de Jerónimo Nadal y la monja de Ágreda. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2006, vol.28, n.88, pp.53-70. ISSN 0185-1276.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iie.18703062e.2006.88.2213.

This work centers its attention on a significant group of New Spanish paintings depicting the Passion, which were inspired by the engravings of Jesuit Jerónimo Nadal (1507-1580), while proposing a hypothesis regarding their circulation. Although many of these compositions form part of a narrative series, the side altarpiece of the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores Parish Church in Xaltocán is the only case that establishes a complete narrative cycle based on the Imágenes of Nadal. As each of these works features a different way of interpreting the engravings, we also wish to determine how the anonymous painter of Xaltocán selected and transformed this source material.
