Abstract

ESPARZA LIBERAL, María José. Abraham López, un calendarista singular. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2004, vol.26, n.84, pp.5-52. ISSN 0185-1276.

This work reviews the figure of Abraham López, editor, printer, engraver and lithographer who, between 1838 and 1854, produced the year-book which bears his name. This is an important example of the work of publicists in the first half of the nineteenth century. The author plots the change affecting the contents and the illustrations that appeared in successive yearly issues; from an initial interest in a subject such on the pre-Hispanic past, she describes López's evolution towards the role of a chronicler of events taking place in the country's capital. He thus offers an account of modifications that took place in the physiognomy of the city, during the 1840s, and describes political conflicts in train, including the United States invasion. As this event regards , López's reportage depicts the bravery and resistance of the people against the presence of invading troops. A case of censorship of the 1851 year-book is also recorded concerning a critical article on the fair at San Juan de los Lagos.
