Abstract

BARGELLINI, Clara. Nuevos documentos sobre Gabriel José de Ovalle y algunas consideraciones acerca de la apreciación de la pintura novohispana. An. Inst. Investig. Estét [online]. 2001, vol.23, n.78, pp.77-102. ISSN 0185-1276.

The discovery of a group of documents about the New Spanish painter Gabriel José de Ovalle, active in Zacatecas and in Durango around the middle of the 18th century, provides new information about the painter and his career. It also suggests considerations about the appreciation of his painting in the historiography and during his own lifetime. The documents inform us that Ovalle had traveled to Zacatecas from Mexico City, so the definition of his paintings as "popular" is questioned, and new readings proposed, more in accordance with the context within which the artist worked
