Abstract

JAIME P., Alberto; ALCOCER, Gaspar; BARRERA GONZALEZ, Josefina  and  SANABRIA PEREZ, Juan S.. Ground subsidence and earthquake induced settlements in Mexico City, using satellite imagery. Ing. sísm [online]. 2022, n.spe108, pp.23-52.  Epub Mar 10, 2023. ISSN 0185-092X.  https://doi.org/10.18867/ris.108.592.

The land subsidence and the sudden settlements induced by earthquakes in Mexico City subsoil are determined with Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), which uses satellite images. Some previous studies about this phenomenon in Mexico City are summarized. As well as the methodology DInSAR, used for determining the relative settlements. Moreover, the results of some profiles of relative settlement for year 2016 are presented, and for the months between August and November 2017 in Mexico City Downtown and the Xico Volcano Area. In addition, the sudden settlements induced by the September 2017 earthquakes are calculated. The annual regional settlement in Mexico City, determined with the use of satellite images, is made in a brief period of time and at low cost. The results are in very good agreement, when compared with those obtained from traditional surveying methods.

Keywords : land subsidence; sudden seismic induced settlement; satellite imagery; DInSAR; Interferometry.
