Abstract

HERRERA, Cristina et al. Half-Truths: Limits Perceived by Adults to Become Involved in the Prevention of Teen Pregnancy in Mexico. Nueva antropol [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.88, pp.134-154. ISSN 0185-0636.

This article analyzes adult perceptions which are key to their role in the orientation of youth in the prevention of pregnancy. It is based on a qualitative study in which thirty-six interviews were conducted with the mothers of pregnant teenagers, academic personnel and health care providers in Mexico. It was found that a permanent tension exists between permissiveness and restriction in the styles of orientation given by the adults interviewed, a result of the strong influence of fears and lack of knowledge of the benefits of talking to adolescents about sexuality. None of the three groups interviewed perceived itself to be responsible for providing information on sexuality to adolescents.

Keywords : early pregnancy; sex education; adults; prevention.
