Abstract

MONTIEL TORRES, Oscar. The Life Cycle of Women Working As Prostitutes and the Pimp System. Nueva antropol [online]. 2018, vol.31, n.88, pp.31-51. ISSN 0185-0636.

In this article I analyze the relationship between the life cycle of women working as prostitutes and the pimp system, considering rural pimps from Tlaxcala as an empirical paradigm. First I define this system of slavery, including its rationale of power, mechanisms and strategies. Then, I analyze the relationships between women within this structure: mothers, sisters, daughters, wives and women unrelated by blood. I explain how the bases of power of the whole work for these women and how this system uses the feminine life cycle to exert its command over them. I also explain how love and “abducting the bride” are mechanisms for recruiting women and the vulnerability that facilitates their recruitment, subjugation, and exploitation. Finally, I present an example to help understand part of the organization’s function.

Keywords : Pimp system; sexual slavery; pimps; prostitution; human trafficking.
