This article discusses the professional viewpoint of divorce and its role in spousal decision-making. The reason for including the perspective of lawyers and judges is the fact they are necessary social actors in understanding divorce and explaining the decision-making it involves, because they are part of the institutional context where such decisions are made. This article is the product of an ethnographic study on decision-making in divorce of women and men from the lower middle class in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
