Abstract
ALCANTARA ROJAS, Berenice. To translate, to evangelize: The Saint Buenaventura's Life of Saint Francis of Assisi turned into nahuatl by fray Alonso de Molina. Estud. cult. náhuatl [online]. 2013, vol.46, pp.89-158. ISSN 0071-1675.
The evangelization of nahua societies was a complex process that, in the facts, it was developed through concrete, and different, experiences of imposition and negotiation of ideas and practices in which intercultural translation played an important and vital roll. The article explores some of the strategies adopted by fray Alonso de Molina in his translation into náhuatl of a Saint Buenaventura's writing about the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The intention is to show how the changes in text were connected with a peculiar way of understanding the process of evangelization and the capacities of the nahua folk.
