Abstract

VALADES, Diego. Los derechos políticos de los mexicanos en Estados Unidos. Bol. Mex. Der. Comp. [online]. 2005, vol.38, n.112, pp.365-403. ISSN 2448-4873.

Voting is the direct result of the recognition and application of the principle of popular sovereignty without any restriction. Popular sovereignty is the base of every democratic system. In connection with the right to vote of Mexicans who are residents outside Mexico's territory, in this essay the author proposes that the analysis of this concept has to be put into its proper context, and thus examine both the favorable and unfavorable aspects of this matter. In this way it is important to study the links of Mexican emigrants with their country of origin, as well as their participation in some political decisions to ratify or rectify what they consider as beneficial or damaging to their interests; moreover, the author explains that it is also relevant to examine the unfavorable aspects, some of which could put in danger national sovereignty and distort the concept of citizenship.

Keywords : emigrants; political rights; democracy; electoral law.
