Abstract

MARTINEZ-ARIAS, Miguel et al. Minimally invasive thoracic costal fixation. Neumol. cir. torax [online]. 2018, vol.77, n.3, pp.203-208. ISSN 0028-3746.

Background:

The thoracic minimal invasion surgery has had a great development worldwide on the last years. This procedure could also be applied in thoracic trauma not only for the cavity assessment but also in helping resolve the pathologies left by the trauma.

Material and methods:

We present a case series study, designed retrospectively, descriptively and observationally presented on a time period of 34 months on patients that went under costal arches attachment through minimal invasion technique, by the thoracic surgery department from ISSEMyM Toluca Medical Center. An analysis was run through taking into consideration age, gender, the surgical time, amount of ribs fixated, hospital staying and eventual complications.

Results:

We present the first series of cases reported for costal fixing with a minimum invasion aproach using the StraCostm system, the technique and the results are displayed. Final sample n = 64, the average surgical procedure time was of 62.11 minutes (58-66). The post-surgery intra-hospital stay days were evaluated with an average of 2.5 (2.2-2.7) days. At the time of this revision, no complications were reported, the average quantity of costal arches fixated was of 3.6 (3.4-3.8).

Conclusions:

Costal arches fixation through minimal invasion, is a safe and duplicate technique, which helps reducing considerably the intra-hospital stay, as well as the post-surgery complications and chronic pain decreasing.
