Abstract

THIRION-ROMERO, Ireri; PEREZ-PADILLA, Rogelio; GARCIA-SANCHO, Cecilia  and  TORRE-BOUSCOULET, Luis. Smoking and lung cancer. Fifty years of evidence. Neumol. cir. torax [online]. 2018, vol.77, n.2, pp.157-161. ISSN 0028-3746.

In the early 1950’s appeared the first epidemiological evidence between the association of smoking and lung cancer. Causal relationship was documented around the middle of the 1960’s and it was not until the following decade that the first effective measure was implemented: tobacco tax increase. Over the last 50 years research has shown the causal relationship between smoking with different cancer and chronic diseases; however, one of four men in the world continue smoking and majority lives in developing countries. Tobacco is a disease that behaves like an epidemic whose persistence is a reflection of health failures, from decades, to recognize it as a global problem and take action on public health. Integral government’s, Scientific’s, nongovernmental organizations and health service provider’s efficient efforts must be done in dealing with the shattering global tobacco epidemic.
