Abstract

NOE-DIAZ, Valeri; GARCIA-GOMEZ, Leonor; SANSORES, Raúl H  and  RAMIREZ-VENEGAS, Alejandra. Impact of smoking and COPD on brain functioning. Neumol. cir. torax [online]. 2014, vol.73, n.3, pp.196-204. ISSN 0028-3746.

There are several conditions and factors that may have an impact on brain functioning due to physiological changes in brain structures. In clinical practice, respiratory disease, including smoking and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are not always approached from a neuropsychological angle. With other comorbidities and at different levels, smoking and COPD foster a series of physiological and neuropsychological changes that have an impact on quality of life and functioning of patients. This review summarizes critical aspects of cognitive functioning and respiratory diseases.

Keywords : Addiction; COPD; hypoxia; neuropsychology; smoking.
