Abstract

Sociodemographic characteristics of caregivers and the problems faced in the care of children with asthma. Neumol. cir. torax [online]. 2014, vol.73, n.1, pp.4-11. ISSN 0028-3746.

This study evaluated in caring mothers of children with poorly controlled asthma, parental perception of symptoms, family impact of asthma and socio-demographic aspects associated with trouble following medical prescriptions. Involving 110 primary caregivers (mean age = 37.6 aged, SD = 6.7) and their children with asthma (7 and 15 ages, mean = 12.3 years, SD = 2.9). The results showed that families are disadvantaged social class, and that the perception of symptoms occurs in high percentage (95.6%). The caregivers showed a strong impact on their lives at the functional and emotional level (91%). Regarding the socio-demographic are women with poor professional development, who have dropped out their formal working life. Fathers involved a little in the care of their children and caregivers received support from the women around, they frequently reported marital conflict (37%). Treatment adherence showed difficulties who lead the study conclusions to the urgent need to implement patient education constants programs, caregivers, family and the immediate surroundings of the child with asthma, and to encourage the integration of men in care of their children and communication with the healthcare team.
